Uses of Steel Strands:Steel strands are a very important material that is widely used in various construction processes. For example, they are utilized in urban light rail, high-rise buildings, overpasses, warehouses, subways, and more.Classification of Steel Strands:Steel strands can be classified based on their use: prestressed steel strands, electrical use, galvanized steel strands, and stainless steel strands. Among these, prestressed steel strands are coated with anti-corrosion grease or wax and wrapped in HDPE, referred to as unbonded prestressed steel strands. The commonly used prestressed steel strands are uncoated low-relaxation prestressed steel strands, as well as galvanized ones, which are often used in bridges, buildings, water conservancy, energy, and geotechnical engineering. Unbonded prestressed steel strands are commonly used in slabs and foundation engineering.Based on material characteristics, steel strands include steel, aluminum-clad steel, and stainless steel strands. Based on structure, steel strands are composed of 2, 3, 7, or 19 high-strength steel wires, and can be classified based on the number of wires as 7-wire, 2-wire, 3-wire, and 19-wire, with the 7-wire structure being the most common.Characteristics of Steel Strands:The main characteristics of steel strands include high strength, good relaxation performance, and straighter deployment. The common tensile strength grades are 1860 MPa, along with 1720, 1770, 1960, 2000, and 2100 MPa grades, with this type of steel also having a very high yield strength.
The manufacturing process is divided into single wire production and wire rope manufacturing. When producing single wires, (cold) drawing technology is used. Depending on the different materials of the products, it can be high carbon steel wire rod, stainless steel wire rod, or medium to low carbon steel wire rod. If galvanization is required, electroplating or hot-dip treatment should be performed on the single wire. In the wire rope manufacturing process, a stranding machine is used to twist multiple steel wires into products. Prestressed steel wire ropes also require continuous stabilization treatment after forming. The final products are usually wound on an I-beam wheel or finished as non-axial coils.
