According to data released by the Indonesian Iron and Steel Institute, Indonesia imported 6.43 million tons of steel in 2017, accounting for 48% of the total steel consumption in the country. In 2015 and 2016, Indonesia imported 6.85 million tons and 6.49 million tons of steel respectively, One of the importing countries.
Indonesia currently consumes 13.4 million tons of steel in the current year and is expected to reach 23 million tons by 2025.Indonesia's normal imports should be 30% of the total consumption, but insufficient steel production, had to import large quantities.In order to reduce import dependency, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry has stepped up the process of iron and steel production and plans to build three large steel plants in South Kalimantan and Sulawesi respectively, with a total investment of 14.89 billion U.S. dollars.
