Summary
SAE1006 vs SAE1008 vs SAE1018 wire rod: chemistry, drawability, typical end products and how to read mill certificates.

Three numbers dominate the low carbon wire rod market: SAE1006, SAE1008, and SAE1018. If you are setting up a drawing line or ordering rod for the first time, you need to know exactly how they differ, because the grade you choose sets the chemistry, the drawing behaviour, and the price of every coil. This comparison gives you the standard reference values and the practical consequences for your production. All three grades are low carbon steels, but their carbon and manganese ranges differ in ways that matter. The table below shows typical standard reference values for these SAE grades; always confirm with the mill test certificate, as producers may aim at slightly tighter internal ranges. Reference note: SAE1006 and SAE1008 are the softest and most ductile common grades; SAE1018 is the upper end of the low carbon family, sometimes classified as mild carbon steel with noticeably higher strength. The lowest carbon of the three. Draws easily, bends without cracking, and is ideal for binding wire, tie wire, and annealed wire where softness matters most. The most widely used low carbon grade. Good balance of strength and drawability. The default choice for galvanized fencing wire, general mesh, and nails. More carbon and manganese give higher tensile strength and better cold heading properties. Suited to fasteners, welded mesh, and wire needing extra stiffness. Binding wire, baling wire, annealed wire, soft tie wire for rebar tying on construction sites across Africa and the Middle East. Galvanized fencing wire, chain link mesh, welded wire mesh, general purpose wire, and wire for nails and staples. Fasteners and cold headed parts, higher-strength mesh, wire forms, and products where the extra stiffness of the grade is an advantage. Your MTC is the document that proves what you actually bought. Look for these items before you accept a delivery: If any value falls outside the grade range in the table above, ask the supplier for an explanation before the coil goes into your drawing line. Usually yes for general fencing and mesh wire, since both are low carbon and process similarly. Check final strength requirements; SAE1008 gives slightly higher tensile strength. It contains more carbon and manganese, and producers often apply tighter controls. The price difference reflects both alloy cost and processing requirements. SAE1008 is the safest fast-moving stock for galvanized fencing wire. Keep SAE1006 for binding and tie wire orders, and SAE1018 only if you also produce fasteners or high-strength mesh. Since 2015, our company has supplied SAE1006, SAE1008, and SAE1018 wire rod to buyers in 118 countries and regions, with Africa and the Middle East as core markets. We provide mill test certificates with every shipment and can arrange trial coils so you can verify drawability before committing to container volumes. Tell us your end product and target wire diameter, and we will help you select the right grade.
